19th December - Hut 194

We had a real live angel in hut 194 tonight who not only looked fantastic but sang beautifully to the delight of the people who came to see the latest instalment of this advent event.








Children from Windlesham school had contributed angels which they had made using their own hand prints.  These decorated all around the inside of the hut and were lit with little fairy lights.




There were also some more three dimensional angels hanging from the roof of the hut.







We had another good crowd including a family who told us that their daughter traveled down from Yorkshire to visit the hut on Saturday.





We also had an email from someone who is following us online from Germany every day so the Beach Hut Advent Calendar is becoming international.


The next hut is the furthest East we go and is number 11.

18th December - Hut 296

We had a life size angel in hut 296, dazzlingly white and beautifully lit.

White seems to be the signature colour for angels as we've seen quite a lot of it in the past 18 days at the Beach Hut Advent Calendar.





As heavenly beings perhaps we expect angels to be perfect and white is a representation of that.

The Bible depicts angels as messengers and soldiers and often as ordinary human beings, so ordinary that they are not even recognised as angels.

Not many of us go around dressed in white as it's not particularly practical, but we do like to think of ourselves as more perfect than we actually are.  Perhaps the job of angels is to remind us of that and to help us to aspire to being better.



The life-size angel was surrounded with a collection of lighted stars and a few glass angels keeping an eye on things.

For the next hut we head towards the East and will be at number 194.

17th December - Hut 437

The hut this evening was a true performance thanks to Korina, Emily and Alan.  They put on a carefully rehearsed show with contemporary dance, music and poetry, even the dog took part.







The hut was very simply decorated with a night sky backdrop filled with stars and a few simple Christmas lights.  







The most striking part of the installation was the floor of the hut which was knee deep in feathers.  This gave a beautiful effect as the dancers moved around the hut, sweeping feathers with them and occasionally picking them up and allowing them to cascade through their fingers.  






Alan accompanied the dancers on his harp and sometimes sang, sometimes played and sometimes recited celtic themed poetry.















The whole evening was so beautiful that it's hard to describe in words.








There was a sense of calm and peace over all the proceedings and people sat on the floor, rapt with the wonder of it all.

The next hut is number 296. 

16th December - Hut 332

There was a literary and musical theme to hut 332 tonight which is owned by Cathy Watts, local writer of the Sandies books for children which are set in and around the beach huts.  




Iris Watts is Cathy's mother and has written a book about angels entitled 'Angels on Call', and the book was on display and on sale with all proceeds going to charity. 








Cathy's books were also available and have become a regular part of the beach hut advent calendar as hut 332 has been part of this for a few years now.





The hut was very prettily decorated with stars and Christmas lights and a little row of angels keeping watch over the whole scene.


What made the evening extra special was the attendance of the Dawn Chorus under the direction of Julie Nye.  This singing group meets weekly at St. Luke's Prestonville and at West Street Loft in Shoreham and the two groups combined to form a choir of something 50 who sang beautifully in the clear, still night.




With the chorus and all their friends and family plus the usual visitors we get every night there was quite a crowd on the beach tonight.

The singing was so infectious that it made everyone want to join in so we finished our time together with a communal version of Silent Night which seemed very fitting on such a calm, peaceful evening.

The next hut is number 437 and will be featuring dancers and feathers!

15th December - Hut 279

The hut tonight was created by the good folk at the Grace Eyre centre which supports adults with learning difficulties.  The centre owns hut number 279 and was keen for the various art groups that run there to use their creative talents to create an art installation.  




There were different types of artwork on show, all of which contributed to a wonderful overall look.  A lot of the contributors had created ceramic art and there was a shelf of abstract figures and shapes at the back of the hut.




These included some pots which were inspired by the idea of angels.





Hanging from the shelf were some angel wings which were also made in a pottery class and which were decorated with rainbow colours.

Directly below these and sat on the floor was quite a large 'animal style' angel which looked as though it was modelled on a meerkat.


All of this was placed in a beautiful emerald green environment and the entrance to the hut had a green runway leading up to it.




This was scattered with pebbles under which we could find postcards about the work of the Grace Eyre Centre.

All of this was dominated by a giant multicoloured mandala which represented the peace of the angels beaming down to the world.


Our next hut will feature the Dawn Chorus community choir and is number 332.

14th December - Hut 225

We had an amazing performance at hut 225 tonight as well as a beautifully decorated hut.

Kidz Klub put everything together and they had all been working hard to create a host of angels to hang in the hut.





Kidz Klub runs youth groups across the city and provide valuable support and activities to some of the most vulnerable young people in the city.

Their angels hung in the skies above a small nativity with all the angels looking as though they were praising the baby who had been born in a stable.



They were made of card and had wings made from doilies.

The whole scene was lit up by an array of coloured projected lights and a disco style laser.

This was projected onto the face of the hut with patterns of stars and snowflakes adding to the blue angel scene inside the hut.



But the highlight of the evening was Kirsty Ruiz Vazquez who performs under the stage name Skyflow.  You can watch her work on Youtube here or on Instagram here

She is a 'hooper' and is the current European Hooper of the Year.  Hooping is a mix of dance, gymnastics and hula hooping and is especially effective with light up hoops at night.




Some of the shapes Kirsty created had a hint of angel about them and a large crowd gathered to watch her perform.







Kirsty is a capable gymnast and was able to bend herself into a variety of extraordinary contortions.





The hut formed a fantastic backdrop to her various dance routines and the performance area was defined by a carpet which also protected Kirsty's feet from the gravel and pebbles.

She performed throughout the evening despite the cold.

Our next hut is number 279 and the artwork will be created by the Grace Eyre Centre.

13th December - Hut 362

The Aldrington school art club contributed their talents to create hut 362 this evening, with expert adult guidance from Laura.

The head and shoulders of the angel were made of cardboard and it had a paper chain skirt.





Glowsticks had been made into chains to hang alongside the paper chains to give the skirt some light and colour.  The whole ensemble swayed gently in the breeze once we'd managed to secure all the paper which had got a little damp in a brief shower or rain just before 5.30pm.




The angel had a beautiful white furry halo which was also highlighted with a circle of glowsticks.

A group of children and teachers from the school came along to sing carols in between helping themselves to chocolate, mince pies and mulled wine.



The sides of the hut were flanked with chains of angels made by the children.  They looked as though they were all climbing a ladder of light up to heaven.



It was a very happy, playful evening with lots of children running around and a real sense that Christmas is not far away.
